The study of cosmic acceleration and especially understanding its nature is nowadays one of the important branches of the field of cosmology. I would like to introduce some of the ideas that are put forward to explain this unsettling phenomenon, alongside exposing notions at the basis of modern cosmology. I will discuss why and how the path of modified gravity theories is taken by some cosmologists, rather than simply considering the cosmological constant. I would like to finishing by showing how a rich phenomenology of observables of the large scale structures in the universe arises in theories where an extra scalar degree of freedom is added to Einstein’s equations.
