The Institute of Physics of Liquids and Biological Systems (IFLYSIB) was established in 1981 through an agreement between the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and the National University of La Plata (UNLP). IFLYSIB operates under the La Plata Scientific and Technological Center (CONICET) and the Department of Chemistry (Faculty of Exact Sciences, UNLP).

History of the Institute
The Institute of Physics of Liquids and Biological Systems (IFLYSIB) was created on December 29, 1980, by Resolution No. 1083-80 of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET). It was established based on the Department of Biophysics at IMBICE, led by Dr. Raúl Grigera, and the Statistical Mechanics group from the Faculty of Exact Sciences, directed by Dr. Antonio Rodríguez, aiming to institutionalize their close academic collaboration and streamline institutional support. Subsequently, on March 9, 1981, a cooperation agreement was signed with the National University of La Plata (UNLP), followed by an agreement with the Scientific Research Commission of the Province of Buenos Aires (CIC).
On November 18, 1985, the intervening parties agreed to rescind the previous agreements that led to the creation of the Center and its institutes, establishing that IFLYSIB would legally and academically depend on the National University of La Plata. On December 9, 1985, by Resolution No. 1061/85 of the UNLP Rector, it was officially determined that IFLYSIB would administratively and academically depend on the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the UNLP.

On December 3, 1985, by Resolution No. 1061-85, Dr. Antonio E. Rodríguez—who was serving as the Director of IFLYSIB at the time—was appointed Interim Director for a maximum period of six months. During this period, an open call for candidates was to be issued to fill the position permanently, in accordance with Rector’s Resolution No. 1097/85.
On June 13, 1986, by Resolution No. 29/86, the President of the UNLP extended Dr. Antonio E. Rodríguez’s appointment as Interim Director for an additional 6 months. This designation was further extended on April 20, 1987, by Resolution No. 149 until September 11, 1987. Subsequently, the Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences, through Resolution No. 282 on May 6, 1988, extended Dr. Rodríguez’s term until the completion of the formal selection process. Finally, on November 28, 1988, Resolution No. 997/88 called for an open competition to fill the position of Director of IFLYSIB.
As a result of the selection process, Dr. José Raúl Grigera was appointed Director of IFLYSIB, taking office on June 1, 1989, for a four-year term according to Resolution No. 529/89. On November 11, 1990, an agreement was signed between CONICET and the UNLP to reintegrate the institutes that had been disconnected in 1985; as a result, IFLYSIB became a CONICET-Associated Institute. Building on the 1991 framework agreement between the UNLP and the CIC, an annex was signed in December of that year for the CIC to sponsor activities at IFLYSIB.
Following further resolutions and open calls conducted jointly between the UNLP and CONICET in 1993, 1996, and 2001, Dr. J. Raúl Grigera’s leadership was periodically renewed. Notably, by joint Resolution UNLP No. 6/08 and CONICET No. 0010/030, Dr. Grigera was appointed Director for a five-year term starting in 2003.

During 2009, a new open call was issued for the position of Director. As a result of this joint process between the National University of La Plata and IFLYSIB-CONICET, Dr. Ezequiel V. Albano was appointed Director of IFLYSIB for a five-year term starting in July 2010.
During the 2020-2021 period, another open call for the Directorship was conducted. Following the joint selection process by the National University of La Plata and IFLYSIB-CONICET, Dr. Santiago Grigera was appointed Director of IFLYSIB for a four-year term starting in July 2021.
