Resumen:
Ice accretion on airplanes, wires, or roadways, the formation of icefalls, ice stalactites, frozen rivers or aufeis are a few examples of ice structures formed by the solidification of capillary flows (drops, rivulets, films). Among the many scientific questions that remain open regarding these phenomena, the effect of freezing on contact line motion is undoubtedly one of the most important and mysterious.
In this talk, we experimentally investigate this intricate coupling between wetting and freezing of a contact line by exploring the spreading of a water droplet on a cold substrate in various situations. This work allows us to identify the main mechanisms that govern the arrest behavior of a contact line in the presence of solidification. In particular, the peculiar wetting of water on its own solid will be examined, and the highly debated contact angle of water on ice will be determined.
